Article 50 transparency obligations are now in force
The European Commission says AI Act transparency requirements under Article 50 began applying on August 2, 2026. Covered interactive AI systems must inform users that they are dealing with AI, and providers of relevant generative systems must add machine-readable marks to AI-generated or manipulated content.

Machine-readable marking is the technically important part
A visible label communicates to a person. A machine-readable mark is intended to let software detect that content was generated or manipulated by AI. That creates a possible bridge between model output, publishing systems, platform moderation and downstream detection tools.
The Commission's Code of Practice is designed to help providers and deployers operationalize those obligations. More than compliance, the mechanism could push the ecosystem toward common metadata and detection conventions.
There is a transition period for some existing systems
The Commission says certain systems placed on the market before August 2, 2026 benefit from a transition period until December 2, 2026. That means enforcement and implementation will not become uniform overnight.
This timing matters for measurement. A mixed environment of newly compliant systems, transitional systems and content produced outside the EU will make provenance coverage incomplete even if the legal obligations are clear.
The real technical test is persistence
A provenance system is useful only if origin information survives common transformations such as compression, resizing, transcoding, screenshots, clipping, remixing and reposting. The more brittle the mark, the less useful it becomes after content leaves the originating platform.
Adversarial removal is an even harder problem. If a motivated actor can reliably strip or counterfeit provenance signals, machine-readable labeling may become one evidence layer rather than a definitive authenticity test.
Provenance could become a cross-platform protocol problem
The highest-value outcome would be interoperability: model providers emitting compatible provenance signals, editing tools preserving them, platforms reading them and independent tools validating them. That resembles protocol infrastructure more than a conventional policy notice.
The difficult governance question is who defines the semantics. A mark can indicate that AI was involved without proving whether the underlying claim is true, false, benign, deceptive or materially edited by a human.
